Bred as a companion dog to the Cuban Aristocracy during the 1500’s, and named after the Capital of its origin, the Havanese, also referred to as “the silk dog” would become the national emblem of Cuba. Now almost extinct in its founding country, the Havanese was brought to United States during the Cuban revolution in 1959 when only 11 dogs were left to save the breed from extinction. Since then the breed has thrived throughout the United States and Europe. These highly trainable and companion driven dogs make for a perfect family pet.
Appearance and Grooming
A small and sturdy gait with dark almond shaped eyes and a full muzzle this breed will never appear fragile. Despite its silky coat and minimal shedding, routine grooming is an absolute necessity for this dog breed. With its common coloring of black, blue, brown, gray, silver and white most owners opt for a shorter cut for easier maintenance. Though these puppies can also wear their hair long, they will require added brushing several times a week, if not daily and regular trims every 3 to 4 weeks.
This toy dog breed is friendly, playful, alert and intelligent with a sweet, non-quarrelsome disposition. Aggressive behavior and shyness is not common in these dogs and should be corrected immediately if necessary. They are the most happy when they are with their owner as they form a special bond and a high level of attachment to the person they spend the most time with. Though, they prefer to stay at home, given the chance they also love to run around outdoors.
Family and Companionship
With the earned title of, “Velcro Dog” you must believe that this loyal little canine will never leave your side. They are needy dogs who are keen on lots of affection and play. Perfect for a family with children or other active pets, as they love little clowning around and spreading their affection to their adopted family and everyone they meet.
This small purebred needs light to moderate exercise each day. A short walk or some indoor play each day will ensure your puppy is getting all of the exercise that they need. Be careful not to over exercise this little bundle of energy, as much as it will love to keep up, too much exertion is not good for its tiny frame.
Training and Socialization
Even though this highly intelligent and over eager pooch is a fast learner, they still need patience and gentle guidance as their pride can be easily hurt if scolded to harshly. Practicing praise and creating a treat based reward system will result in both a happy puppy and a happy owner.

We had been looking for the perfect puppy for our family. When my daughter found premier pups website we fell in love with the pups. We made the 3 1/2 hour drive over to pick one up. We were having a hard time deciding between two on the website, but we fell in love with the first one they brought us. They were great people to work with!! Very nice facility too!!
We've bought 2 puppies from Premier Pups and we are very happy with them. I would encourage anyone who is in the market for a new puppy to buy from them. Each time was an outstanding experience for our family and our new fluffy additions!
We brought Champ (Guapo) home one week ago today! The entire experience from purchasing to bringing him to his forever home was wonderful. Anytime I called with a question whoever answered the phone was extremely helpful and friendly. We received a video after he was ours and someone has checked on him frequently! We would highly recommend Premier Pups to our family and friends!
We looked forever for our new family member. I am so glad we chose Premier Pups. The staff was awesome and explained everything to us upon picking up our baby. Even supplied us with the medicines needed for the next 2 weeks. They called me twice to check on Mario, texted twice and even when I called them with questions, they were kind and very informative. We love our baby and we are already talking of getting him a playmate next year and when we do, we will definitely come back to Premier Pups!
We were very apprehensive about purchasing a puppy this way but it was a great experience. The staff is there for you always to answer questions. We got her on 3/25/20 (my husbands birthday) And we were concerned about how she would handle the flight but when we picked her up she just wanted out of the crate. She didn’t get sick in it and had no accidents in it. When we got home she had the zoomies and adjusted so well to her new life. She is the sweetest puppy ever you can tell she was handled and loved prior to coming to our home. I would definitely recommend them.
My kids (3,5,and7) and husband surprised me on my birthday by saying I could get a puppy! We already have a 5yo Havanese from Premier Pups, and he has been so great! So we did lots of research on which breeds we were interested in---small, hypoallergenic, good with kids and dogs---then headed out to see Mike. The first pup was a Maltese, tiny as can be, all white. We fell in love! Just for fun we asked to see the Havanese he had---uh oh. We fell in love again! We ended up taking them both home! :) Mike and his staff were incredibly knowledgable about breeds, training, health concerns, all of it. They sent us off with a full stock of supplies in case of tummy troubles or trouble acclimating once we got home, and LOTS of detailed written instructions, just in case. When we had questions or concerns---one pup didn't want to eat at first---they were always available by phone and within hours both pups were playing, eating, and thriving. They continued to check in on us in the following days and weeks, and I know if we needed anything, they're just a phone call away. We also go the Puppee Poo Palace, which has been great! Our pups are now about 3 mos. old, still working on the potty training, so the ease of the slide out tray and separate little lofted bed has made life and cage cleaning so simple!! Thank you Premier Pups! We adore our new additions, Daufuskie (Duh-FUSK-ee, named after our favorite vacation island) and Carson!
I just got my puppy from Premier yesterday and Iam thrilled with her, not only with the pup but the whole process. They are extremely good with communications, from the start with her shipping and and instructions for her adjustment to her forever home, already recommend to several people, also kudos to Delta Air for their compassion for my little girl.
I was looking for a small breed and I seen Havanese ?? I purchased 2 pups from premier and could be happier. The process is easy, the customer service is wonderful and they give you everything you need for a happy healthy pup... in my case 2 pups. The pups are so much fun to watch and cuddle. Thank you for everything ??
The adoption of our little guy was very smooth. We got our guy home and he's been the best puppy. He was potty trained within about 4 weeks. I highly recommend PremierPups. In fact, we just put in a bid for another puppy.
We purchased Sammy a week before the pandemic hit and he has been so much company for my husband and I. Premier Pups answered all questions and concerns prior to bringing Sammy home and they are very helpful and professional. I wouldn't hesitate to work with them again. We have 15 grandchildren and he has been great around children too.
