Frequently Asked Questions

This designer hybrid has a Shetland Sheepdog and a Miniature Poodle to call its parents.

These little pups are full of affection and love. Their sweet personality makes them great companion dogs. They are playful and active, but also love to cuddle up next to their humans.

The average lifespan is 12 to 15 years.

Any mixed breed will be unpredictable in terms of a coat. It depends on which parent breed they take after more. The most common coats these pups have are silky, thick, double, wavy and coarse.

If the coat is more like the Poodle the coat will be low shedding, but, you should still brush your dog a few times per week. Professional grooming appointments should be scheduled every 4 to 8 weeks. If your little one inherited more of the Shetland Sheepdog’s coat, it will shed quite a bit more and a moderate amount of grooming will be required. Like that of the poodle coat you’ll want to brush your pup a few times a week if not daily. Professional grooming appointments should then be scheduled every 4 weeks or so.

These dogs are very intelligent and are eager to please and obey. These pups love to be with their humans so they will always be up for training. Consistency and positive reinforcement will allow these dogs to thrive. Socialization at an early age is also a very important part of training.

They were first bred right here in the United States.

The Miniature Sheltiedoodle has an average height between 13 to 16 inches and an average weight between 15 to 25 lbs.

These dogs are very athletic and full of energy. Their activity levels range from moderate to high. Though they thrive on regular exercise they will be happy to adapt to the lifestyle of their owner and family. They love swimming, going for runs, and practicing agility training. Daily walks as well as some active play totaling about 2 hours each day should be plenty to keep this spirited one fit, happy and healthy.

American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Breed Registry, Designer Dogs Kennel Club, Dog Registry of America, Inc. and the International Designer Canine Registry all recognize this designer mix.

The Miniature Sheltiedoodle is an excellent choice when there are children around. Their energy and playfulness partnered with their affectionate and loving personality makes them a best friend of sorts with kids. This dog also gets on well with other pets and other dogs.

These dogs are very active and will burn calories more quickly than a lot of dogs their own size. Your pup should be fed 2 to 3 cups of a high quality nutritious dry dog food and should be divided into two meals each day.

Though this dog is very adaptable they still require a lot of room to run and play. Apartments are not the best choice for them unless they have plenty of room both indoors and outdoors to romp around.

The most common colors are white, cream, black, brown and gray and are often a combination of colors.

Yes. They are also referred to as Sheltipoo and Sheltie Poodle Mix.

The Mini Sheltidoodle, also called Sheltipoo, is a designer breed crossed between the Shetland Sheepdog and the Miniature Poodle. Though not much is known about their origin and history, we can tell you that they take on the positive attributes of both parent breeds making for the ultimate loyal companion.

Appearance and Grooming

This hybrid dog will have a wedge-shaped head and a long muzzle that will be rounded near the end. Their coat is short and curly like that of the Poodle parent with medium thickness. They come in an array of stunning colors including, black, white, sable, brown, red, silver, grey, pied, cream, and blue. Brushing your dog two or three times a week will help keep it clean and smooth as well as monthly visits to the groomer for trims and nail clippings.

Temperament

Attentive, loyal, even tempered and well-mannered are the main attributes of this mid-size companion dog.  Though curious, these dogs pose themselves in a respectable manner in the presence of strangers, but will watch them intensely. If they sense trouble of any sort, they will use their loud boisterous bark to alert his owner immediately.

Family and Companionship

These loveable companions are best brought into a home with young children when they themselves are pups. As this breed ages, they become hypersensitive to loud noise and random movements if not introduced to such things early on. An ideal family dog, your Mini Sheltiedoodle will be a protector and a watcher. They do well in most environments if given ample space to run and play and aren’t left alone for long periods of time.

Exercise

Most certainly an energetic breed, your puppy will require plenty of positive outlets for that energy. Daily walks and visits to the dog park as well as a variety of toys to keep them stimulated while at home will keep this puppy happy and healthy and well entertained.

Training and Socialization

This hybrid dog breed is extremely intelligent with a bit of a sensitive side, which means that they are easily trainable so long as you use gentle and positive training techniques. Through proper training, these dogs make for excellent therapy dogs. Shy and quiet by nature, socialization at an early age is important if you want your dog to behave appropriately in public.
