Transition Kit & Feeding VIDEO LINK

-DO NOT feed your puppy until arriving home. Puppies are prone to car sickness. FEEDING YOUR PUPPY BEFORE THE CAR RIDE WILL INCREASE NAUSEA.

USE THE TRANSITION ESSENTIALS STARTER KIT TO FEED YOUR PUPPY

-The first 2 hours after arriving home are ESSENTIAL. Use the karo syrup/baby food mixture to fill the puppy’s belly back up after a long day.

STEP 1: mix karo syrup & baby food

-Add 3mL (half of syringe) of karo syrup (clear syringe) into a full jar of Gerber Chicken & Chicken Gravy baby food.

-Thoroughly stir to mix.

-You may use this mixture over the next week to help keep your puppy’s belly full.

STEP 2: administer karo syrup/baby food mixture

- Give your puppy 24mL of mixture upon arriving home. Continue to give 12mL of mixture every 2 hours until the puppy is eating hard food on its own.

STEP 3: continue feeding your puppy

- Use PAWSOME COMPLETE DOG FOOD (Call our reservation team at 740-809-3074 option 1 to order)

- Offer your puppy 1 TBSP per Lb of bodyweight of hard dog food after initial feeding. The puppy should eat this amount or more every 3-4 hours, totaling at least 1/2 cup per day. Measure the pieces & set a timer to keep track.

- If your puppy is NOT EATING the hard dog food, administer 4 full syringes (12mL’s) of karo syrup/baby food mixture every 2 hours until the puppy begins to eat on its own.

-· If your puppy is relying on baby food as its main source of nutrition: for every 1Lb your puppy weighs it needs 1 jar of baby food per day.

SMALLER PUPPIES (Less than 2Lbs)

If your puppy weighs less than 2Lbs, follow the directions below in addition to the feeding instructions.

- Give your puppy 1mL of karo syrup every 2-4 hours for at least 2 weeks after arrival.

- Make sure your puppy has plenty of hard food available, including at night.

- Nighttime Feeding: Feed your puppy 3mL of karo syrup/baby food mix at midnight and again around 3am for the first 7 days.

CRUCIAL WELLNESS RULES

IMPORTANT: It is VITAL to your puppy’s health to read and follow all instructions included in this guide. The first 2 weeks are crucial to your puppy’s adjustment.

-Make sure to answer all calls from Premier Pups to ensure your puppy is settling in properly.

- Use PAWSOME COMPLETE DOG FOOD (Call our reservation team at 740-809-3074 option 1 to order)

- Playtime should be limited to 45 minutes, then the puppy should be confined to a small space (ex. A play pen) for 2-3 hours to ensure the puppy is getting proper rest and eating.

- It is MANDATORY your puppy eats EVERY 2-3 HOURS in order to keep up with the energy expended from the excitement upon arrival to their new home.

- Keep your puppy’s belly full at all times. A full stomach should feel bloated and tight like a blown up balloon. If it feels thin & squishy follow feeding steps 1-3 immediately.

-Make sure dry dog food & water are always available. DO NOT assume your puppy is eating just because food is available. You are responsible for monitoring your puppy’s eating very closely. MINIMUM either 1 TBS per Lb of hard food every 3-4 hours, totaling at least 1/2 cup or 1 jar of baby food per Lb a day.

-Use Cesar soft dog food to help entice the puppy to eat the dry dog food. Mix ¼ of the Cesar packet with 20 pieces of hard food. If your puppy is resorting to this mix, they need to eat it every 2-3 hours. Cesar food is strictly a treat/tool to entice the puppy to eat & should not be used as a substitute for actual hard food.

-You may also try softening the hard dog food with warm water or low sodium chicken broth to entice the puppy to eat.

- Remember that getting your puppy to eat their hard food is not nearly as important as ensuring their belly is always full & happy. Do not stop the above instructions until your puppy has fully adjusted, which can take 7-14 days.

-Do not ration the puppy’s food until the puppy has been settled into your home for at least 7 days.

-Playtime should be limited to 45 minutes at a time, then the puppy should be confined to a small space (ex. A play pen) for 2-3 hours to ensure the puppy is getting proper rest and eating.

Warning Signs VIDEO Link

WARNING SIGNS

If you do not see improvement with any symptoms listed below within the first 3-4 hours, CONTACT US any time (DAY OR NIGHT) at (740)-469-2447.

VOMIT/SPIT UP

Contact us if your puppy vomits.

-If you notice bile spit up (yellow or brown), it means your puppy’s stomach is empty and needs your immediate assistance. Give your puppy 0.5mL of PeptoBismol using the provided feeding syringe.

-Wait 45 min& if your puppy holds down the Pepto Bismol, give 3mL of karo syrup/baby food mix.

-If your puppy holds down the food, continue to feed 3mL of baby food every 20-30 minutes for 2 hours.

- If your puppy spits up the food, give it another 0.5mL of PeptoBismol and wait 45 min.

- After 2 hours of holding down food, feed your puppy 6mL of baby food mix every 30-45 min for the next 2 hours.

-Once the belly is full, all the bile should be counter-balanced and your puppy should begin to eat again.

- DO NOT STOP feeding your puppy baby food until they start eating their hard food again.

DIARRHEA/LOOSE STOOL

After arrival it is common for the puppy to experience a loose stool from the stress of the day’s activities. Please do not be alarmed. If diarrhea continues after 2 days from arrival, please give us a call to discuss possible ways to eliminate the irritation.

COUGH/HACKING

If your puppy shows signs of cough, hacking or nasal drainage do not panic. Although it may sound dangerous, everything will be ok. Small breed puppies have tiny tracheas; the slightest bit of irritation/phlegm on the trachea sounds a lot worse than it truly is. If you are concerned, call us before panicking. Everything will be ok. Your new puppy goes through quite a bit during its first week at its new home. Different irritants can create this result. A simple antibiotic combined with a cough expectorant will resolve this in no time. No X-ray is needed. (For example if your child has a cough, your doctor gives you an antibiotic and tells you to come back for more diagnostics if things do not improve in 4-5 days. The same scenario exists with the puppy. If it’s happy with normal temperature and appetite, an antibiotic is a solid place to start.) We will not cover X-rays unless diagnostics are needed due to prolonged irritation.

Prescription Reimbursement VIDEO Link

PRESCRIPTION REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM

***We offer prescription reimbursement based on certain symptoms if detected within 14 days of arrival***

We offer prescription reimbursement based on certain symptoms if detected within 14 days of arrival.

Cough/respiratory – 14 days Doxycycline,  10 days Azithromycin, 10 days Baytril

Giardia – Up To 5 days of Drontal plus (the reason we will not cover panacur and metronidozale is because you have just given those meds to your puppy via the preventative meds program. If a giardia positive fecal remains we require Drontal Plus to be used)

Follow Up Giardia Test – Direct Smear or centrifugation (Drontal Plus must be used in order to cover the follow up fecal)

In order to receive reimbursement, one of the above must be the first choice prescribed by your vet.

This means if a drug such as Clavomox is given first for a cough, we will not cover the cost of any medications after that choice.

This means for giardia, if metronidozale and panacur are provided, we will not cover the cost.

This means if your follow up giardia fecal test is an Eliza test, it will not be covered.

The reason behind our prescription reimbursement program is to pay for what gets the job done in the quickest most effective manner.  Our goal is to treat something one time successfully.  Our team of vets have determined these prescriptions are the most direct and effective way to correct the above mentioned issues (by no means is this implying your dog will have an issue).  Our goal is to educate you on what we will reimburse, in the case that one of these minor irritations occur.  Simply email a receipt showing the initial vet visit, which shows prescription cost, to [email protected]

AFTER THE FIRST 10 DAYS

VACCINATE YOUR PUPPY

- Take your puppy to the vet 7-10 days after receiving the puppy to continue the series of vaccinations.

-Bring the invoice emailed to you upon purchase from [email protected] OR the health certificate flown with your puppy.

-After the first visit you will need to return for a rabies vaccination when your puppy is 12-16 weeks old.

-Ask your veterinarian about the recommended (and legally required) rabies vaccination protocol for your area.
