Common Conditions

Biting Hind Legs

March 10, 2014, 2:55 PM
Q: I brought my puppy home on Friday. Everything was great. I've noticed over the past few days that she bites at her hind legs often. At first she would just like herself after using the restroom and so I thought she was licking it off of her legs as well. After watching her, I realized that she is actually biting at her legs. She had her first round of vaccinations last week and the vet said she was a very healthy puppy and didn't have worms or anything. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow but I'm really worried at why she keeps biting her hind legs. I've checked her and don't see any spots or fleas or mites or anything. Everything looks good but she continues to bite at her hind legs. Anyone know what this could be?
A: The most common conditions that would cause a puppy to bite mostly at their rear legs would be fleas, surface bacterial infections or sarcoptic mange mites. Although trying to make a diagnosis with out seeing your puppy would be difficult it should be easy for your veterinarian once he sees the puppy again.
