Food Ingredient Choices

Q: I am having a hard time getting my 10 mo old female maltese to eat! She seems to like liver dog food treats. Can a maltese have liver flovored dog food or dog food with liver in it?

A: While liver dog treats, especially the freeze dried liver pieces or cubes, are one of my favorite choices for treats they are not even close to a balanced diet. Feeding a liver based or flavored complete food should be fine. It is important to understand that choosing a food for your puppy should be your choice based on ingredients and price and any puppy will eventually accept your choice if you don't give into urges from your puppy.
