Veterinary Costs

January 24, 2014, 1:42 AM
Q: Normally how much will the initial visit and the second visit to the vet cost? I heard some horrible story that it can be 500 to $600. Is that true? I just got a 8 weeks old Havanese from the breeder 4 days ago and hear lots of scary stories about veterinary expenses.
A: For your area and assuming examination, routine testing and at least the standard vaccination for a young puppy typical cost would usually be less than $150. If you choose to begin parasite control programs or if your puppy was diagnosed with a problem that required treatment, those would add to the total. The best advice is to inquire about the cost before the service is rendered, listen closely to explanations of proposed care, if you are not clear on what is suggested or if the fees are reasonable then get a second opinion through Doctorpup.com or another vet.
