Potential parasite problems

Q: I have read that nematodes are good to put out in your yard to protect against fleas and a natural my concern is are they harmful to small dogs? And Will our dogs get worms from them being in the yard are one little one likes to pick things up in the yard and chew on grass.
A: While adding nematodes (worms) does not pose a threat as long as they are from a healthy environment I have not found that to be a significant control measure. If there have been pets previously using the same area or there is frequent use by some wild mammals there could be intestinal worm exposure. You should be using a internal parasite (worms and heartworms) product for your puppy.
