Chewing on Stuff?

June 28, 2014, 5:26 PM
Q: Typically how long do pups go through teething? Also, is there an effective way to stop them from chewing on furniture legs, etc?
A: Most often owners want to blame their puppy chewing on stuff or them on teething when in reality that really doesn't have much to do with it. Biting and chewing are a normal part of play behavior, watch any dogs playing with each other and also observe any adult dog contently at rest and you will see biting and chewing are just come with dog. The good thing is it is also a moldable behovior, meaning you can train it away in the same manneer you teach any other behovor. Quick, recognizable reprimands coupled with some sacrifice when it 's not right and poor on the praise and positve interaction when it is. There are multiple commercial products designed to discourage chewing, no one is the best and no one works for all puppies. Some standbys are Bitter Apple, Orang etc, Boundary and there are also a host of all natural products.
