Best Goldendoodle Size Guide: Toy, Mini, Medium & Standard Explained
Published Friday, October 17, 2025 by Elena R. in Popular Dogs, New Puppy

Planning on getting a Goldendoodle puppy and don’t know what to expect in terms of size? Or are you wondering how big your Goldendoodle puppy will get?

Goldendoodles come in every size imaginable - from tiny lap dogs to big, adorable teddy bears. You’ll find them in toy, miniature, medium, and standard sizes.

A toy Goldendoodle might stay under 15 inches and weigh around 10–25 pounds, while a standard Goldendoodle can easily hit 22–26 inches and weigh anywhere from 50–90 pounds. The rest fall somewhere in between, depending on which parent they take after - the Poodle or the Golden Retriever.

If you’re trying to get a clear idea of what to expect, let’s break it down.

Standard Goldendoodle – The Biggest Goldendoodle Size

image of full grown standard goldendoodle size

Standard Goldendoodles are the biggest of the bunch - the ones that turn heads at the dog park and take up the whole couch. They’re the result of breeding a Golden Retriever with a Standard Poodle, which explains their size and build.

Adult Golden Retrievers usually weigh between 55 and 75 pounds and stand about 21 to 24 inches tall. Adult Standard Poodles are similar. They weigh around 45 to 70 pounds and can reach 22 to 26 inches in height.

Most Standard Goldendoodles weigh between 50 and 90 pounds and stand 22 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder. Males tend to be on the larger side, while females can be a bit smaller and lighter.

Once you add generations into the mix, the scale can shift a little. Some generations lean more toward the Golden Retriever side, while others take after the Poodle.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the Standard Goldendoodle generations and their size range:

  • F1 Standard Goldendoodle (First Generation): 50–90 pounds, 22–26 inches tall. This is the classic Goldendoodle mix of a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle.
  • F1B Goldendoodle Size (The Backcross): 50–85 pounds, 21–25 inches tall. The F1b Goldendoodle is a mix between a Goldendoodle and a Standard Poodle. This generation is usually 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever
  • F1BB: 45-80 pounds, 21–25 inches tall. The F1bb is again a backcross between an f1b Goldendoodle and a standard Poodle. This means there is even more Poodle influence, so they can sometimes be a bit slimmer.
  • F2 (Second Generation): 50–85 pounds, 22–26 inches tall. This is a mix of two F1 Goldendoodles, which means there is a more varied size range.
  • Multigen: 50–90 pounds, 22–26 inches tall. Multigen Goldendoodles are bred from multiple generations.

Medium Goldendoodle Size

image of full grown medium goldendoodle size

Medium Goldendoodles are right in between - not too big, not too small. They’re the size most families go for because they’re easy to manage, fit comfortably in most homes, and still have that playful, full-sized doodle personality.

A Medium Goldendoodle is usually the result of breeding a Golden Retriever with a Medium (Moyen) or Small Standard Poodle, or sometimes by mixing a Mini Goldendoodle with a larger parent to hit that middle range.

On average, Medium Goldendoodles weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and stand about 17 to 21 inches tall at the shoulder. They’re sturdy enough for outdoor adventures but compact enough for apartment living or smaller spaces.

Like with other Goldendoodle sizes, the generation plays a part in how big (or small) your doodle ends up. Here’s what that looks like for medium Goldendoodles:

  • F1 (First Generation): 35–50 pounds, 18–21 inches tall. F1 Medium Goldendoodles are a balanced mix of the Golden Retriever and Medium Poodle.
  • F1B (Backcross): 30–45 pounds, 17–20 inches tall - 75% Poodle, 25% Golden Retriever. F1b Medium Goldendoodles are achieved by breeding an F1 medium Goldendoodle back to a medium/moyen Poodle.
  • F1BB: 30–40 pounds, 17–20 inches tall. The F1bb is a mix between an f1b Medium Goldendoodle and a Moyen Poodle.
  • F2 (Second Generation): 35–50 pounds, 18–21 inches tall. F2s are the offspring of two F1 Medium Goldendoodles.
  • Multigen: 30–45 pounds, 17–21 inches tall. Bred from multiple goldendoodle generations to achieve a more predictable size.

Medium Goldendoodles tend to strike the best balance for most owners. They’re active and athletic without being overwhelming in size, and they still have that cuddly, family-friendly temperament the breed is known for.

Miniature Goldendoodle Size

Miniature Goldendoodles are easily one of the most popular sizes. They are small enough to fit comfortably in any home but still big enough to keep up on hikes or playdates at the park. They’re friendly, easygoing, and great for people who want that classic doodle look without the “big dog” footprint.

A Mini Goldendoodle is usually bred by pairing a Golden Retriever with a Miniature Poodle. Most Mini Goldendoodles weigh between 20 and 35 pounds and stand about 14 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder. They have that perfect medium-to-small build.

Just like with the other sizes, the generation plays a role in how your Mini Goldendoodle turns out. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • F1 (First Generation): 25–35 pounds, 15–17 inches tall. This is a mix between a Golden Retriever and a Miniature Poodle.
  • F1B (Backcross): 20–30 pounds, 14–16 inches tall with more Poodle influence (75%). The F1b is a mix of an F1 Mini Goldendoodle and a Miniature Poodle.
  • F1BB: 18–28 pounds, 13–16 inches tall with even stronger Poodle genetics, often a bit smaller and leaner.
  • F2 (Second Generation): 20–35 pounds, 14–17 inches tall - a mix of two F1 Minis, sometimes showing more variety in size and coat texture.
  • Multigen: 20–30 pounds, 14–16 inches tall - carefully bred for predictability, with consistent size and coat quality.

Mini Goldendoodle puppies are the go-to for families and singles alike who want a smart, friendly dog that’s easier to manage but still has plenty of energy and personality.

Toy Goldendoodle – The Smallest Goldendoodle Size

image of full grown toy goldendoodle size

Toy Goldendoodles are the smallest in the Goldendoodle family, and honestly, they’re hard not to fall in love with. They’re tiny, adorable, and full of personality. Despite their size, they’ve got all the same charm, intelligence, and playfulness you see in the bigger doodles, just in a much smaller package.

A Toy Goldendoodle is typically achieved by breeding a Toy Poodle with a smaller Mini Goldendoodle or, in some cases, a small Golden Retriever line. The goal is to create a compact, healthy dog that keeps that signature doodle temperament without sacrificing structure or health.

Most Toy Goldendoodles weigh between 10 and 25 pounds and stand around 10 to 15 inches tall at the shoulder. Because of their small size, they’re a great choice for apartment living, traveling, or anyone who wants a doodle they can easily pick up and take anywhere.

As with all Goldendoodles, the generation plays a role in their size. Here’s how it typically breaks down:

  • F1 (First Generation): 15–25 pounds, 13–15 inches tall. This is a mix of a Golden Retriever and a Toy Poodle.
  • F1B (Backcross): 10–20 pounds, 12–14 inches tall - 75% Toy Poodle. The F1b Toy variety is achieved by crossing an F1 toy Mini Goldendoodle with a Toy Poodle.
  • F1BB: 10–18 pounds, 11–13 inches tall. This generation has even more Poodle influence, which comes with a smaller size.
  • F2 (Second Generation): 12–22 pounds, 12–15 inches tall. This is the result of breeding two F1 Toys, with size and coat varying a bit more.
  • Multigen: 10–20 pounds, 11–14 inches tall. Multigen Goldendoodles are bred for consistency in both looks and temperament and are often the most predictable in size.

Toy Goldendoodles may be small, but they don’t act like it. They’re lively, affectionate, and always ready to be part of whatever you’re doing.

Goldendoodle Size Prediction Chart

If you already have a puppy and want to estimate how big they’ll get, here’s a simple guideline based on age and expected adult size. (This works best for doodles up to 12 months old.)

Age  Toy Miniature Medium Standard
2 months 3-5 lbs 5-8 lbs 8-12 lbs 10-15 lbs
4 months 6-10 lbs 10-15 lbs 15-25 lbs 25-35 lbs
6 months 8-15 lbs 15-25 lbs 25-35 lbs 35-55 lbs
8 months 9-18 lbs 20-30 lbs 30-40 lbs 45-65 lbs
12 months 10-25 lbs 20-35 lbs 30-50 lbs 50-90 lbs

Most Goldendoodles reach about 50–70% of their adult weight by 6 months, and they’re usually done growing by 12 to 14 months (sometimes a bit later for Standards).

How accurate are these charts?

These charts are quite accurate as general reference guides, but they’re not exact science. They’re based on averages and real breeder data gathered from reputable Goldendoodle programs.

The weight and height ranges are derived from the parent breeds (Golden Retriever + Poodle) and adjusted by generation (F1, F1B, F2, Multigen) to reflect how genetics typically influence size and coat type.

The puppy prediction chart is also just a guide, not a guarantee. Puppies grow at different rates based on their diet, exercise, and even when they’re spayed or neutered. Still, it gives you a solid idea of what to expect so you can plan for things like crate size, food portions, and long-term care.

Conclusion

No matter the size, Goldendoodles all share the same lovable personality that makes them such a hit with families everywhere.

If space or portability matters, the Toy or Mini Goldendoodle might be the perfect fit. If you’ve got room to spare and love an active companion, the Standard Goldendoodle could be your match. And if you want something in between, the Medium Goldendoodle really does give you the best of both worlds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big will my Goldendoodle get? This is the most asked question about the Goldendoodle’s size. The adult size depends on whether your Goldendoodle is Standard, Medium, Mini, or Toy - plus the generation (F1, F1B, multigen, etc.). Expect somewhere between 10 to 90 pounds and 10 to 26 inches, depending on those factors.

What is the average Standard Goldendoodle size (weight and height)? Most Standard Goldendoodles weigh between 50 and 90 pounds and stand about 22 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder.

How large do Mini Goldendoodles grow (pounds and inches)? Mini Goldendoodles typically weigh between 20 to 35 pounds and reach 14 to 17 inches in height, though genetics and parent sizes can push them a bit outside that range.

What about Toy Goldendoodle size - how small can they be? Toy Goldendoodles are the tiniest. They usually weigh between 10 to 25 pounds and stand 10 to 15 inches tall.

Does the generation (F1, F1B, F2, Multigen) change Goldendoodle size? Yes, generation plays a big role in how big or small a Goldendoodle can be. For example, F1B often leans more toward the Poodle side (sometimes smaller and curlier), while multigens can be more predictable in size and coat.

Can you predict Goldendoodle size before they grow up? You can estimate based on parent sizes, generation, and puppy measurements (like growth charts).
