Pomsky Dogs 101: What's Good About 'Em What's Bad About 'Em

Pomsky Dogs 101: What's Good About 'Em What's Bad About 'Em
Published Tuesday, November 29, 2022 by Premier Pups Team

Pomsky dogs are one of the most beautiful designer breeds in the world. They are a cross between the Siberian Husky and Pomeranian breeds, meaning they’re small, fluffy, and completely sweet.

Pomskies inherit an abundance of amazing qualities from their parents but also some of the not-so-great ones. From their energy levels to their trainability and health, here’s everything that’s good and bad about Pomsky dogs.

What’s Good About ‘Em

Pomskies Are Loyal to the Core

If you know anything about the Siberian Husky (Pomsky parent breed), you know they’re one of mankind’s oldest and most loyal companions. Huskies have been around for ages, spreading out from the Siberian cold to the tropics. They are one of the first dog breeds to be domesticated, which means they’ve been man’s best friend for over 3,000 years.

Pomskies inherit the small, adorable size from their Pomeranian parent, along with the Pom’s lovey-dovey nature, but they get their loyalty from their Husky parent.

One of the best things about Pomsky dogs is their love for humans. They thrive on attention and inclusion, which means they’ll be happy to do whatever you’re doing. All that matters to them is to be by your side. With a Pomsky, you get all the love and attention, and none of the separation anxiety, since these dogs can be quite independent when need be.

Playful Pomsky

Another amazing personality trait Pomsky dogs have is their love for fun. Pomskies will want to spend their day playing and running. Their fun and adventurous nature are enough to get anyone off their couch to partake in a game of tug or a friendly chase.

Their playful nature also makes them one of the best breeds for families with children. They can spend endless hours keeping both small children and teenagers entertained. There is also very little chance of anyone getting bored with a Pomsky in the house. This dog’s good mood is contagious.

Hybrid Dog Health

Since Pomsky puppies are a crossbreed of two purebred dog breeds, they enjoy enhanced vigor and health. Most Pomskies live long, uneventful lives without suffering from any major health problems. This hybrid vigor is common in crossbreeds. A mixed gene pool often means that certain health issues that purebreds are prone to are canceled out, leaving the offspring with better health and longevity. They can still be prone to some of the issues that Pomeranians and Huskies have, though this is typically rare.

Vet bills can pile up to a small fortune each year, so getting a healthy dog from the get-go can save you thousands. The Pomsky’s excellent health is one of the breed’s best qualities.

Beautiful Pomsky is an Understatement

Who can resist a dog that has the forever-young appearance of a puppy? Pomskies change very little from puppyhood to adulthood. They keep their young looks well into their teen years.

Pomsky dogs have a very similar appearance to a young Husky puppy, and they sport that look for most of their lives. They are small, fluffy, and have the cutest pointy ears you’ve ever seen. Their eyes are expressive and beautiful with shades of brown or blue, and their coats have gorgeous shades of gray, white, black, red, and tan. They can be small or medium size depending on their generation (F1, F1b, F2), and they have long, feathered tails they like to wear curled over their backs.

Because of their glamorous looks, Pomskies are considered one of the most exclusive designer dogs. They are quite the celebrities on social media, with an appreciation count in the millions. They are also one of the rarer designer breeds, so if you adopt a Pomsky, you can expect heads to turn.

Puppy Training Difficulties

Pomskies are smart dogs, but they’re not always the easiest to train. They have the ability to learn whatever you throw at them, but they also have a mind of their own. They can be hot-headed, and unless you motivate them to their liking, they will be fairly difficult to train.

Pomsky puppies need an outlet for their energy first and foremost. Until their daily energy is spent, they will prefer to do something else instead of sitting still and learning.

Motivation is also very important for this intelligent breed. Pomsky pups love to be rewarded for good behavior, and if they know there is a treat waiting to be had once a command is performed, they will do it.

Although this is not something that can’t be managed, it is something that you should think about before adopting a Pomsky. Pomskies need a patient and consistent owner who can train them and work with them daily. Untrained Pomskies can be difficult to live with.

Pomsky Shedding

Siberian Huskies and Pomeranians both shed, so there is no surprise to learn that the Pomsky sheds too. Although one parent sheds less than the other, there is no telling how much a Pomsky will shed throughout the year. Some may shed when seasons change, while others may shed all year round.

Dogs that shed need to be brushed more often to maintain a smooth coat and to keep the house free of fur. And if you get a Pomsky, this is something that you might have to do every day. Daily brushing, even if it’s just for a quick minute, is essential in keeping the Pomsky’s coat tangle-free. Brushing also helps remove the fallen hair from the coat so that it doesn’t fall in clumps at every step around the house.

Because they shed, Pomsky dogs have no place near an owner that suffers from pet-related allergies. They have no hypoallergenic qualities and can cause severe allergic reactions.

Energetic Pomskies

The Pomsky’s energetic nature can be both good and bad, depending on the owner. Pomskies have enough spunk and energy to tire anyone out, especially owners that live a more relaxed lifestyle. These dogs require a lot of daily exercises to help them burn that extra energy. They are lovers of adventures! Hikes, swims, runs, and any activity that keeps them on the move is what they crave.

Expecting a Pomsky to calmly sit around the house all day is a big No-No. These dogs aren’t meant to sit around all day. They can be more relaxed, but only after they’ve had their exercise needs met. They also need mental stimulation to keep their minds active, so treat hunts, obstacle courses, and puzzles are often a must to keep them from getting bored while indoors.

For an owner that lives an active lifestyle, the Pomsky dog fits right in, however, for owners that prefer a relaxed lifestyle, this designer dog might not be the best choice.
