The Teddy Bear is a designer hybrid that was first bred in the year 2000, from crossing a Shih Tzu and a Maltese (Mal-Shi) or in some cases from crossing a Shih Tzu and a Bichon (Shichon). They are quite popular in the United States and are highly sought after from dog breeders.
Appearance and Grooming
They have round faces with big eyes, small and flat noses, long and droopy ears and a puffy short tail. Partnered with fluffy coats, they resemble little bears. Their fur has different colors, making each of their patterns unique. The colors most common are white, brown, black, grey and yellow. Their fluffy hypoallergenic coats need to be brushed, washed and trimmed periodically.
One of the most loyal dog breeds; they are highly affectionate with high levels of obedience. They are recognized for their gentle nature and bark only when they feel the need to alert their owner. This attribute makes them a great selection for a watch dog.
Family and Companionship
This dog will share its love and affection with each member of its family, equally. Its sociable and friendly nature makes it a great companion for both people and other pets. These are the perfect pet for a family who always has someone around as they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time- they thrive in the company of others.
The Teddy Bear is not a highly active dog therefore a small daily walk along with some indoor play is adequate for their overall health.
Training and Socialization
This designer breed, although sporty and playful shows traits of stubbornness. They do extremely well at following commands and learning new tricks, as long as the owner is gentle and patient. Like many small breeds they need extra attention when it comes to potty training. Socializing your new puppy at an early age and continuing through adolescence will assure good behavior and maturity into adulthood.

I starting looking high and low for the perfect pup for our family when I came across premier pups. That’s where I found Emme (previously Julie) I can’t not give this place enough thumbs up!??. From the initial phone call to the follow up calls they were helpful and professional. Esme is the sweetest pup and has been such a blessing to our family already. And at 11 weeks she’s almost totally potty trained and is quickly learning commands. I will defiantly come back to premier pups for future puppies! 5 stars all the way! ?? ????????
what a doll Tucker is! he has added SO MUCH FUN to our family! buying online seemed so strange and scary, but every contact we had with Premier increased our confidence a little bit - then when we finally went for it we were scared all over again. HOWEVER, it ended up being a FANTASTIC experience. I was kept informed all day on his "fly home" day. He showed up on his plane and was safely packed into his little carrier. He came supplied with tons of stuff to help ensure he got settled easily and stayed healthy. Premier reached out multiple times during that first week+ to check on him and see if we had any questions or concerns. He was well taken care of before we got him and has the sweetest temperament and the cutest personality. He looked just like his profile pic from the site (THAT was a big fear of ours -- ordering just based on a picture -- but he was just the same as his picture showed. yay!!) He was a surprise for our 9 yr old. After having him for a day or so, she declared that her "life is now complete!". lol. Now, after going through the process, I would CONFIDENTLY RECOMMEND Premier and we would ABSOLUTELY use them again if we decided to add another baby to our family!
I adopted my teddy bear puppy Nov 23rd 2020. My puppy is healthy and happy. I am very happy with my the adoption from Premier Pups. My daughter came to visit on New Years and fell in love with Baxter. I told her how happy I was with my adoption from Premier pups that she adopted a teddy bear pup Ed from premier pups that will be available for her family on Jan 17th!
We purchased Brutus Feb 2019. He is a ball of energy right now, is smart and knows what he wants. He knows how to sit and stay and potty trained quickly. The puppy stage is challenging at times with him but we see glimpses of sweetness in him. The experience at Premier was great and would recommend them to anyone. We love are independent little guy.
We lost our sweet cavalier Elvis in January and I did not think I would be ready for a long time to get another dog. Just doing research I found Premier Pups and the Teddy Bear breed and I was hooked. Never have I ever just picked a pet from a picture and I was very nervous. But her face just spoke to me and we took a chance. Everything went very smoothly, all questions answered right away. The only downside was not being able to get updated photos between 6 and 8 week period, but after it was explained why I reluctantly understood and they sent pics as soon as she got to their facility . Pick up was just as smooth! Lexi is amazing, she did great on the 7 hour car ride home, sleeps through the night, has the best personality, she is so smart, she learned sit and down the first week home! She is everything we never knew we needed and we are in love! She goes everywhere and is so well behaved! I think Elvis would approve for sure!
I got Abby on Monday, March 12th and she has already brought so much joy to me. Premier Pups is so awesome to work with. The whole process was seamless and they even call and check up on her. I recommend them to anyone wanting a special puppy.
Just received Jax today!! His flight went well and he was very timid and shy when we first arrived home (expected). But soon he was chasing the cats and now he's sleeping like a good little puppy, I couldn't be happier.
Pandora is an amazing addition to our family. She is so loving and great with the kids. She wakes me up every morning by nibbling on my nose when she needs to go potty. I would recommend a Teddy Bear breed to anyone looking for a smaller dog. Thank you Premier Pups!
Our experience with Premier Pups was pretty fantastic. Nazra is a healthy, energetic, adorable Shih-Poo puppy and we are thankful that PP made her a part of our family! If you are buying a pup and are considering using PP, do it. They offer an amazing level of service. They are not sketchy and are honest and approachable. The instructions for giving medication overwhelmed me a bit, but they talked to me several times on the phone to walk me through the process. She was a hit at the Vet's office, and the doc commented on how healthy she was. Although I want our next dog to be a rescue, PP does such an amazing job with their pups and level of service I'm tempted to get another puppy through them! Thank you to PP, and to the breeder of this Shih-Poo. We are so happy to have her in our lives.
Our family owns a Premier Pups teddy bear who we adore, so we felt comfortable working with Premier Pups when we were ready for our first pet. Jilly Bean (formerly “Mya”) has made our house a home! We had her potty trained in less than a week with no accidents since. She is so sweet, makes us laugh, and loves to play, cuddle, and go for walks. She’s about 12 lbs. and we always receive compliments regarding how soft her fur is. She loves being around people, other dogs, and children. We couldn’t love her more! We highly recommend Premier Pups, as we would certainly be returning customers if/when we decide to get Jilly a puppy sibling. :)
