Mini Goldendoodle History

A designer breed, the Miniature Goldendoodle was first bred in 1969 by crossing a Golden Retriever and a Miniature Poodle in order to create a hypoallergenic guide dog. With a rise in popularity during the 1990’s, the Miniature Goldendoodle would spread out through three generations. A first generation Miniature Goldendoodle (known as an F1 Mini Goldendoodle) is a cross between a purebred Golden Retreiver and a Miniature Poodle. A second generation Miniature Goldendoodle (known as an F1B Mini Goldendoodle) is a mix between an F1 cross and a Miniature Poodle. A third generation Miniature Goldendoodle (known as an F2 Mini Goldendoodle) is a cross between two Mini Goldendoodles.

To better understand the Mini Goldendoodle designer breed, we can take a look back at the history of the Golden Retriever and the Poodle breeds. Although its origin is a bit of a mystery, with some claiming it originated by crossing a Water Spaniel with a Retriever, and others saying it originated from a pack of Tracking Sheepdogs, what history has taught us is that the Golden Retriever, as we know it today, has been a loving and loyal friend of humans for centuries. A favorite companion of hunting parties, the Golden Retriever has been famous throughout history for its strength, speed, agility and devotion.

The Poodle, who now holds second place as most intelligent dog, has been depicted in paintings and other artworks since the 13 th century in both France and Germany. Highly intelligent, proud, agile and elegant, the Poodle has been a favorite at royal courts throughout history, being especially adored at the King’s Court in France during the 18 th century.
