A newer designer dog breed, the Shorkie is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Shih Tzu, these tenacious and protective pooches have no idea they are a small dog. They are toy sized dogs who have plenty of energy and lots of love to give. They are fiercely loyal to their owners and because of this, can become anxious when parted from them.
Appearance and Grooming
This small breed with their thin legs and wispy tails, have a decent amount of muscle on their bodies. They have a rounded face and a short muzzle. Most take after their Yorkie parent with a straight or a slightly wavy coat. To touch it is usually soft and sleek. As they are a hybrid, Shorkies can come in a range of colors including Black and Tan, Brown and White, Gold, Red and Gold, Black & White. Though not 100% hypoallergenic, this breed has very minimal shedding and with regular brushing it would be almost unnoticeable.
These dogs are generally sociable and enjoy the company of people and other dogs. They are playful but also know when it’s time to relax. Similar to their parent breeds they are alert and vocal, making them great watchdogs. However, their bark is definitely worse than their bite.
Family and Companionship
A spirited, stubborn and intensely loyal protector, the Shorkie is best suited for adult only homes, or those with experienced older children. They don’t like to be left alone for long periods of time and can become anxious and moderately destructive. Early socialization will help to ease their anxiety.
Despite their small size, these dogs are energetic and active. They can easily walk for up to an hour each day (if they feel like it) their stubborn personalities may prefer to stay curled up on the couch instead of going for a walk. It is recommended to exercise these pups 30-60 minutes each day to keep them healthy and fit.
Training and Socialization
Though these dogs are highly intelligent, their stubborn characteristics can make training difficult. This breed thrives on routine and becomes despondent when yelled at. It is important that you train them consistently and don’t become frustrated. One or two short, 15 minute training sessions a day is best and make sure they master what they are learning before moving on to the next command or trick. As with most dogs, positive reinforcement and encouragement will always make for the best results and a happy pup. These dogs are not hard to socialize as their curiosity makes them want to meet people and animals of all ages. When socializing with other dogs keep an eye on them as their small size. Because these mighty little dogs think that are much larger than they actually are they can get easily hurt in rough play with larger dogs.

Premier Pups was wonderful in helping me find the right puppy for me! Nixon has the sweetest demeanor and is very loving. I greatly appreciated having the supplies to take home with me to make sure that Nixon had a great first day. The staff is so caring and checked in with me during the first week I brought him home. I had a wonderful experience with Premier Pups.
Just got our Sophie yesterday is doing great eating soo good , and pouncing every where, we are already in love... Thanks Premier Pups!!!
Chewie is the best thing to happen to our family for a long time. He's a little firecracker at times, but we love his little spazzy fits when he can't wait for you to get him out of his crate. We did the Pup-Pee-Poo Palace training with him and he was using the pad and going outside regularly within 1-2 weeks. He has only had a couple of accidents in our home which I'm so surprised about. He's such a smart dog. We can tell that he was well bred and well taken care of and basically well primed for crate and outdoor potty training by the people at Premier Pups. Our entire experience working with them was lovely. Very friendly, helpful and answered lots of questions. They sent us with everything we could have needed for bringing a new puppy home. Our first dog was a rescue who ended up being very sick and we lost her to a blood disorder. I was very pleased to hear that Premier Pups offers a super Premier warranty that also comes with online vet help with any questions about your pet, when you need it. My daughter was devastated when we lost our first dog to that illness and when we brought Chewie home, our daughter was ecstatic. The only downside is that we couldn't afford two dogs at once because Chewie is such a playful guy, we can tell he really wants a playmate. We will be looking into getting another puppy from PP VERY soon! I have referred probably a dozen or more people to this website because I am so pleased with every part of our experience. You will not go wrong by purchasing a pup for you or your family from this site. They are fantastic!
I was very skeptical at first, going through an online site. But I am glad that I did. Looking through the pictures I fell in LOVE with Archie. (He totally looks like an Archie so we decided to keep the name however we call him Archibald The Great, Archie for short). We ended up making a four hour drive to pick him up. He was the cutest thing ever. I got him on the 10th of May, I'm writing this on the 16th of May and he has adjusted well. He is a spunky little pup. Perfect health. Absolutely ADORABLE!!!!! I'm am so glad I chose Premier Pups. The facility was VERY clean and the staff that helped us was very polite. I 100% recommend them to everybody.
Our dog was aging at the time, we didn’t expect to get another dog. But, we thought maybe getting a puppy would help lighten our aging dogs spirits. We found Penny (aka Amber) and decided what a great addition she would be to our family. So we flew her to Connecticut, she’s been a joy ever since we got her! Thanks Premier Pups!! We can’t imagine Penny not being apart of our family!
We got Archie on New Year’s Eve and he’s been an absolute blessing! He’s so loved, so passionate. One healthy pup! He’s a perfect fit in our family
