Care

Grooming

Aussiechons are low-shedding dogs. They are low-maintenance and don’t require an intensive brushing routine. One weekly brush is enough to keep their coats shiny and to prevent matting. A monthly bath is also recommended to keep their skin clean and their coats healthy. Trimming their nails and under paw hair and cleaning their ears should also be done regularly, preferably after every monthly bath.

Adult Aussiechon dogs as well as young puppies can be prone to dental issues and would benefit greatly from having their teeth brushed. It is recommended to brush their teeth daily and use only vet-approved dog toothpaste. The products used in Aussiechon grooming should always be specifically designed for dogs and approved by the veterinarian.

Exercise Needs

Aussiechons are moderately active dogs. They enjoy long walks, playtime at dog parks, canine games, and any fun outdoor activities they can do with their family. Two or three walks per day are recommended to keep them healthy and in shape. Play sessions at home with interactive canine toys and puzzles are also a great way to keep Aussiechons active and happy. Because they are naturally agile dogs, they require mental exercises such as puzzle games and treat hunts to keep them mentally stimulated and away from boredom.

Health

The Aussiechon is a dog breed that enjoys excellent health. Not only are Aussiechon puppies unlikely to inherit any health issues common in the breeds of their parents, but they also benefit from hybrid vigor which is a result of crossbreeding two purebred dogs. Some minor concerns the Aussiechon health can see are the same as in every dog breed. These include joint problems, dental issues, vision weakness during old age, and common dog allergies. Pet insurance and regular vet checkups are always recommended for the well-being of every dog.

Lifespan

The average lifespan of the Aussiechon is between 12 and 15 years. Some Aussiechons have been known to live longer than 15 years when properly cared for. The parent breeds of the Aussiechon puppy are also known to be long-lived dogs. The oldest Bichon Frise lived to be 21 years old, while the oldest Mini Australian Shepherd lived to be 29 years and 5 months old. The Mini Aussie that lived to be 29 was named Bluey and lived between 1910 and 1939.

Training

Aussiechon puppies are impressively intelligent dogs. Training them should be an easy task as they are bright, eager learners, and obedient students. They are easy to housebreak, and they pick up on tricks quickly. Aussiechon puppies also love to perform and impress, and they will always be looking to learn a new trick or command they can be praised for.

Aussiechons and Aussiechon puppies are fast learning students when it comes to socialization, leash training, complex commands, and more intensive training in agility and obedience. They are friendly, easygoing, and sociable dogs but they still require socialization training to grow up well-balanced and well-behaved around others, especially strangers. They are equipped with an agile mindset and people pleasing personalities, and there is very little they can’t do when it comes to training. These cute puppies respond well to positive reinforcement and reward-based motivation. They love delicious treats, cheers, and praise, and are very fond of being rewarded with their favorite chew toys.

Some Aussiechon dogs may develop separation anxiety if left alone at home for too long or too frequently. Although they are generally independent, they form strong bonds with their owners and crave to be in their company as much as possible. Leaving your Aussiechon puppies alone for short periods of time while they are still young will help them become more independent.

History

The Aussiechon is a cross between a purebred Miniature Australian Shepherd and a purebred Bichon Frise. They are a fairly new, rare, and highly sought-after designer dog breed that originated in the United States a little over 20 years ago. These pups attribute their worldwide popularity to their fun-loving nature, loyalty, brilliant minds, and adorable fluffy looks. As a modern designer breed, the Aussiechon is very young when it comes to breed history.

To better understand the Aussiechon puppies, we can look back at the history and characteristics of the Australian Shepherd and Bichon Frise parent breeds.

The Australian Shepherd is an athletic, hardworking and versatile dog breed that originated during the 1800s in the United States. It is believed that the breed was developed from Australian Shepherd ancestors – Shepherd-type dogs - that were brought from Australia to the western United States to be used as sheep herding dogs. Upon their arrival, the Australian Shepherds became highly popular among cowboys and rodeo fans and were soon the favorite companion pets in western America.

During the 1960s, Australian Shepherds were bred down in size to a Miniature version making them easier to handle and care for. The Australian Shepherds and Miniature Australian Shepherds are now famous cinematic stars in western movies, champions in the canine sports arena, and greatly loved companion pets around the world. They are also a parent breed to several designer puppies, the most popular being the Mini Aussiedoodle (Mini Aussie and Mini Poodle mix), Augi (Mini Aussie and Pembroke Corgi mix), Baussie (Mini Aussie and Boston Terrier mix), and Aussie (Mini Australian Shepherd and Cocker Spaniel mix).

The Bichon Frise breed originated during the 14th century in Tenerife – the largest of the Canary Islands. A dog of royal appearance and attitude, the Bichon Frise has been raised as an adored companion pet in the lap of luxury among the royal families of Spain, Italy, and France. Greatly loved for their gorgeous appearance, the Bichons were often represented in portraits alongside royal figures.

The Frise Bichons received their name “Bichon a Poil Frise - Bichon with curly hair” in France in 1933. Bichon Frise puppies attribute their worldwide popularity to their sunny disposition, sweet nature, and cuddly marshmallow looks. Like the Mini Australian Shepherd, the Bichon Frise breed is also a parent of various mixed puppies such as the Pomachon (Pomeranian and Bichon Frise mix), Cavachon (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bichon Frise mix), and  Yorkie Chon (Yorkshire Terrier and Bichon Frise mix).
