Appearance

Yorkie Poos, although tiny, have the personality, attitude, and skills of much larger fearless dogs. They have a confident demeanor, a spunky attitude, and a determined pounce. These adorable toy dogs stand at 7 to 15 inches tall and weigh between 3 to 14 pounds (depending on the Toy or Mini size of their Poodle parent). The Yorkie Poo has a well-proportioned sturdy-built body, a cute button nose, and dark shiny eyes. Their ears can resemble that of the Poodle parent or the Yorkshire Terrier parent.

The Yorkie Poo sports a minimal to non-shedding coat that can be curly to wavy or straight. The coat is long, silky, and smooth, and comes in various colors and color combinations that include white, black, tan, brown, apricot, red, or silver, with various patterns and markings. The Yorkie Poodle is a hypoallergenic breed very much favored by those suffering from pet-related allergies.

Like most mixed breeds, these small dogs can take after either parent when it comes to coat type, ears, colors, and size.

Temperament

Yorkie Poo dogs are spunky, happy, and playful dogs. They are very fond (and very skilled) at canine sports like agility, obedience, and tracking, games of fetch and hide-and-seek, and dog tricks and stunts. They enjoy trotting along on family adventures, short hikes, and quick jogs. Many Yorkie Poo dog owners attest that their sweet dogs are impartial to the type of activities they take part in as long as they are with their human family. They enjoy lazing around the house and cuddling for hours on end as much as they enjoy going for long walks or chases at the dog park. Bringing home these little dogs is one of the most rewarding experiences, as their owners attest.

When it comes to their families, Yorkie Poos are gentle, loyal, and caring companion pets. They are always at the ready for cuddles, pampering, and playtime. These precious dogs are generous in affection, protective of their people, and dedicated to pleasing. They are also excellent with children, although they are a better fit for older kids who know how to be gentle around toy dogs.

Yorkie Poo puppies are as bright as they come and thanks to their Poodle genes, they can be trained quite easily. These adorable puppies are fast learners, people-pleasers, and puppy treat lovers. With proper motivation, short, fun, and interesting training sessions, there is no limit to what these puppies can be taught.

Hypoallergenic Puppies

Allergies to dogs are a common thing around the world. As of 2021, it’s been reported that up to 20% of the world’s population suffers from pet-related allergies. Allergies to animals, especially to dogs, are triggered when the proteins that are found in the dog’s skin cells, saliva, and urine, are carried and spread through the shedding fur. Loving dogs is easy but living with them when they shed their dander-filled fur isn’t – not when you have allergies.

Care

Grooming

Yorkie Poo dogs have moderate grooming requirements. Although they are not a high-maintenance breed, Yorkie Poos require regular grooming with weekly brushing and a monthly bath to keep their coats smooth, tangle-free, and shining. Because their coats are long and they shed very little, it is recommended to brush and comb them at least 3 times every week. Daily brushing is even better if time allows.

Like most toy breeds, adult Yorkie Poo dogs need to have their teeth brushed regularly, preferably every week, to avoid dental issues. Their ears should be checked and cleaned on a weekly basis as well, and their nails trimmed every month or as often as needed.

Exercise Needs

Yorkie Poo dogs have low exercise needs. However energetic the little Yorkie Poos get, their exercise requirements can be met with a brisk walk or two around the neighborhood and some interactive play at home. Although they enjoy the occasional romp around the yard, chase around the Dog Park, and hike, these are very small dogs that are not built to run for never-ending miles. They are generally content with a daily walk; a home-built canine obstacle course, and a game of fetch.

Health

One of the reasons for the growing popularity of these Doodle puppies is their excellent health that comes from good Yorkipoo breeders and their professional practices. Yorkie Poos are a very healthy breed without many issues. They can develop some of the minor health problems that affect Poodles and Yorkshire Terriers, but they are generally healthier than their purebred parents. Some of the issues they can suffer from include allergies, skin issues, and cataracts in their senior years.

Lifespan

The average lifespan of a Yorkie Poo dog is between 10 and 15 years with a life expectancy of around 14 years. Although this is their official lifespan, Yorkie Poos, like their parents, have been known to live as much as 18 years. Both the mini/toy Poodle and Yorkshire Terrier are blessed with longevity. The oldest Toy Poodle to have lived reached an age of 28 years. Yorkshire Terriers have also been reported to reach 28 years of age.

Training

Yorkie Poo dogs are very smart and easy to train. These little Einstein dogs are equipped with an agile mindset, an eager-to-please personality, and a great desire to learn. As with all smart dogs, Yorkie Poos can sometimes show a bit of stubbornness in training, an aspect that is easily removed with positive reinforcement and delicious puppy treats.

Early socialization is important with Yorkie Poo puppies since they inherit a bit of a prey drive from their Terrier parent. Exposing them to new situations, sounds, other dogs, and strangers is the best way to ensure that a Yorkie Poo puppy grows up to be a well-rounded and good-mannered adult Yorkie Poo dog. Puppy kindergarten is also a great place for socializing a Yorkie Poo puppy.

Although they are generally independent and not prone to separation anxiety, Yorkie Poo puppies should still be trained to be independent prior to being on their own for the first time.

History

The Yorkie Poo is a designer crossbreed of a purebred Yorkshire Terrier and a purebred Toy or Miniature Poodle. The Yorkie Poo Doodle Breed originated in the United States a little over 20 years ago and has seen a steady rise in popularity ever since. These cute dogs have made their presence known worldwide with their strong loyal tendencies, joyful personalities, and sweet nature. They are renowned competitors in dog sports, famous Instagram stars, amazing therapy dogs, and greatly loved companion pets.

As the fur-baby of two exceedingly bright dog breeds, the Yorkie Poo inherits an amazing set of qualities that include great agility, big brains, a friendly disposition, and an affectionate nature from the Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle parent breeds. Because Yorkie Poos are fairly new in the Designer Doodle World, they don’t have much breed history. We can take a look at the history of the Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle parent breeds to better understand the Yorkie Poo Doodle Breed.

The Yorkshire Terrier puppy, also known as Yorkie, is one of the most versatile small dog breeds around. Although not as ancient as other small breeds, Yorkies have enriched their history with jobs like rodent hunters in the mines of Yorkshire, war heroes, the first known therapy dogs, show dogs, and luxury pets for royalty. Yorkies arrived in the United States in 1870 and joined the American Kennel Club soon after. Today, the gorgeous little Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most popular breeds across Europe and the United States.

The Poodle puppy also referred to as Caniche in France and Pudel or Pudelin in Germany, is one of the most ancient breeds in the canine kingdom. The lovely Poodles worked as military dogs, circus performers, therapy dogs, hunters, and many more jobs in which they proved their amazing canine skills. The Poodle breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1887 and has been since named the National Dog of France, Best in Show at Westminster, and classified as the second most intelligent dog breed in the world.

The Yorkie Poo is currently recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club and the Designer Dog Kennel Club.
