Poodle Mixes 101: An Introduction To Doodles

Poodle Mixes 101: See Questions, Doodle Pictures & Top Breeds
Published Wednesday, February 15, 2023 by Premier Pups Team in Popular Dogs

Poodle mixes, or doodles as some endearingly call them, are crossbreeds between a purebred Poodle and another purebred dog from a different breed. To give a few examples, Goldendoodles, Cavapoos, and Poochons are all Poodles mixes. They have a Poodle parent and a parent from a different breed.

What makes Poodle mixes so special is a subject that we could talk about for hours. But to simplify things, these dogs are unique, friendly, highly intelligent, and perfectly gorgeous. They are a beautiful blend of their parents, which means they inherit looks and charm times two.

These dogs have become increasingly popular over the years, and for good reason. They offer the best of both worlds when it comes to intelligence, temperament, and health. Poodles are known for their intelligence and trainability, while other breeds bring their unique qualities to the mix, creating amazing crossbreeds.

If you’re wondering which Poodle mix is the best fit for you and your family, or simply want to learn what Poodle mixes are, we’ve got you covered. This guide will provide you with answers to every question you have about doodles, as well as introduce you to the top most popular poodle mixes in the world.

Why are Poodle mixes so popular?

One of the reasons doodles are so popular is their uniqueness. Poodles are an amazing breed. They're the second most intelligent dog breed in the world; they're hypoallergenic, they come in all shapes and sizes; their breed standard colors are endless, and they are naturally friendly and loyal dogs. Add another purebred dog's qualities to the Poodle's, and you get an amazing blend - a doodle.

Take the Goldendoodle for example. People love Golden Retrievers. And how could they not? They're everything we want in a dog. Except they shed, a lot. When you mix a Poodle and a Golden Retriever, you get a dog that is less likely to shed and that is a better fit for owners who are unfortunate enough to suffer from pet-related allergies. The same goes for size. Golden Retrievers are quite large dogs. Mix them with a mini or toy Poodle, and you get a small little dog that has all the amazing qualities of a Golden retriever, but also fits on your lap just right.

Another reason for their popularity is their great health. Doodles are hardy dogs, and because they have a wider gene pool to draw from, they tend to be less prone to issues that are common in their parents’ breeds. This is called hybrid vigor, and dogs that are a mix of two purebred, healthy dogs, have it. This is not to say that doodles are completely immune to the issues that their parent breeds might be prone to, they’re just less likely to inherit them.

The fame surrounding Poodle mixes is also due in part to social media and Hollywood. For decades, the Hollywood spotlight has seen its fair share of doodle dogs with their celebrity parents on red carpets. Actors, singers, and other artists, just like us, have chosen doodles as their four-legged friends due to their adorable looks, intelligence, and great health. And what Hollywood loves, social media craves. Cavapoos, Goldendoodles, and other popular Hollywood-favorite doodles have a social media following in the millions.

Poodle Mix Generations

You might have heard the term “generation” after hearing about a particular doodle breed. Things like F1, F1b, F1bb, F2, F3 and so on? They may be a bit confusing with all those numbers and letters thrown in, but their definition is quite simple. The different generations of poodle mixes refer to the breeding process used to create these lovable hybrid dogs.

F1 Doodle - The first generation of Poodle mixes, also known as F1, is the result of breeding a purebred Poodle with another purebred dog of a different breed. For example, if you mix a Poodle with a Golden Retriever, you get an F1 Goldendoodle.

F1B Doodle - The F1B poodle mix is the result of breeding an F1 poodle mix with a purebred poodle. For example, to get an F1b Goldendoodle, you have to mix an F1 Goldendoodle with a Poodle. This type of breeding is often used to increase the Poodle-like qualities in the doodle puppies, such as the curly, hypoallergenic coat and high intelligence.

F2 Doodle - An F2 poodle mix is the result of breeding two F1 poodle mixes. For example, to get an F2 Goldendoodle puppy, you have to mix two F1 Goldendoodles.

Multigenerational Doodles - Multigenerational poodle mixes are the result of breeding Doodles together for several generations. These doodle puppies have a more consistent appearance and temperament because they're bred through multiple generations for specific traits.

Although there aren’t any clear guarantees when it comes to the appearance, personality traits, and characteristics of doodles, it helps to understand the different generations before buying a puppy to know what to expect.

How Much Does a Poodle Mix Cost?

The price of a Doodle can vary quite a bit from one breed to another. Aspects like their looks, personality type, health, and parents have a big say in how much one of these gorgeous puppies can go for. The price range for a puppy can begin at a few hundred dollars and reach the thousands. Some doodles can go as much as five digits if their parent breeds are rare. The prices can also be influenced by the breeding practices that breeders follow (natural breeding or artificial insemination), equipment, puppy care, and health guarantees that are given by the breeder.

The Havanese and Poodle breeds are both considered hypoallergenic because they don’t shed and tend to produce less dander than other breeds. This quality is passed down to their offspring, making Havapoos one of the best dogs for allergy sufferers. Setting aside their hypoallergenic qualities, Havapoos are also quite friendly and kind-hearted. They fit well with any dog lover!
