Pomapoo features can vary depending on which parent breed they take after. They can have floppy, pointy, or slightly raised ears, black or hazel eyes, and a long to narrow muzzle. They have a compact built body covered in a soft fur of various colors and color combinations that include white, black, brown, red, fawn, merle, and sable.

Care

Grooming

The Pomapoo is a medium-maintenance dog. Their grooming requirements are low to moderate depending on his coat type and length. A Pomapoo with a straight coat tends to shed a bit and requires a quick brush or comb every other day whereas a Pomapoo with a curly Poodle coat sheds very little, if at all, and can be brushed every other day or twice every week. Many owners prefer to keep their pet Pomapoos in a teddy bear cut, puppy cut, or lion cut. In any case, it is a good idea for these dogs to see their professional groomer 3 to 4 times a year for a coat trim.

In order to prevent tear stains under their gorgeous eyes, Pomapoos need to have their faces cleaned regularly with a damp cloth or vet-approved dog wipes. Pomapoos are also susceptible to periodontal issues and need their teeth brushed regularly with vet-approved dog toothpaste. Their ears should be checked and cleaned regularly, and their nails trimmed as needed.

Because they are not fond or built for extreme weather, Pomapoos should be kept out of extreme heat during summer and dressed in a canine sweater during winter.

Exercise Needs

Pomapoos are tiny toy-sized dogs and although they can sometimes be a bit more energetic, they don’t require much exercise. An average of 30 minutes of exercise each day, a walk, and some active play indoors combined are enough to keep them happy, healthy, and fit. Their nature is generally more laid-back and relaxed as opposed to active, and they much prefer snuggling up to their humans on the couch rather than engaging in over-taxing activities.

Health

Although careful breeding ensures that most common health problems among the Pomeranian and Poodle breeds are canceled out, the Pomapoo can still be susceptible to problems that are common in all dog breeds. Some of the minor health issues that the Pomapoo can suffer from include cataracts, dental issues, weight gain, ear infections, and thyroid problems.

Lifespan

The lifespan of a Pomapoo is between 12 and 14 years. The parents of the designer crossbreed, the Pomeranian and Poodle, have been known to exceed expectations when it comes to age. The oldest Poodle to ever live was a Toy Poodle named Lady. Poodle Lady lived to the amazing age of 28 years old. Pomeranian dogs have also been known to live well past their life expectancy with some living as much as 22 years.  To make sure your Pomapoo lives a long and happy life, it is recommended to provide plenty of exercise and a diet that consists of high quality dog food.

Training

The Pomapoo is a very bright and clever dog. He is a fast learner and a people pleaser as long as he is properly motivated. More often than not, toy-sized dogs develop small dog syndrome which is displayed in stubbornness during training, destructive behavior, and willfulness. Being spoiled or pampered too much leads toy dogs to believe they rule the world and everyone in it and that can only lead to unpleasant behaviors in adult dogs later on.

Training should begin in early puppyhood with Pomapoos as that is the time when they are most impressionable and eager to learn. They are exceedingly bright and can be taught a myriad of tricks, commands, and skills. Pomapoo puppies respond best to positive reinforcement, and reward-based methods, both of which include praise, puppy treats, patience, gentleness, and perseverance. Full-grown Pomapoos can also be trained in agility and obedience.

Socializing a Pomapoo puppy should be done early, preferably as soon as their vaccines are up to date. A socialized Pomapoo during puppyhood will grow up to be a well-rounded sociable dog. Puppies need to be introduced early to other pets, dogs, people, and sounds to avoid shyness or fearful behavior like adult dogs.

Separation anxiety is common among Pomapoo puppies, so it is recommended to train them prior to leaving them alone for the first time.

History

The Pomapoo is a fairly new designer Doodle Breed, a cross between a purebred Pomeranian and a Purebred Toy Poodle. The Pomeranian and Poodle are both ancient breeds with long histories as working dogs, loving companion pets, and show dogs. Thanks to their great popularity, they were crossed to create the perfect lapdog and companion pet that would inherit the intelligence, agility, sweet nature, and trainability of both parent breeds. As a new designer crossbreed, the Pomapoo doesn’t have a rich breed history. We can take a look at the history of the Poodle and Pomeranian parent breeds to gain a better understanding of the Pomapoo breed.

The Pomeranian puppy, also known as “Loulou de Pomeranie” and “Pom-Pom”, is the smallest member of the Spitz family and a highly popular purebred breed. The sweet, tiny Pomeranian dogs we’ve come to know and love today are descendants of a larger Spitz sled dog that originated in the Arctic region. The Pomeranian ancestors arrived in Pomerania (region of Germany and Poland) centuries ago and were met with admiration among the Pomeranian people. Bred down in size and renamed by the Pomeranian folk, the lovely Pomeranian puppies made their way from near the Baltic Sea all across Europe and onto the laps of kings and queens. Queen Victoria, one of the Pom-Pom’s biggest fans, bred the Pomeranians down in size by half through many generations and is believed to be responsible for the breed’s ever-growing popularity.

The Poodle puppy, also known as Caniche, Pudelin, and Pudel, is one of the most remarkable dog breeds in the world today. Hypoallergenic coat, high intelligence, great agility, and astonishing beauty, the Poodle is a renowned companion pet, show dog, and movie star. Originally from Germany, Poodles have known fame throughout Europe as well as Australia, Asia, and the United States. They have been named the most in-vogue breed of France, the fashionable pets of royalty, the great circus performers, and the most excellent companion pets. Famous with the traveling circus, Standard Poodles were bred down to a Miniature size for better handling and control, and later to a Toy size that would be met with adoring admiration. Poodles are the Einstein dogs of the canine world and the most popular companion pets in many countries.

The Pomapoo breed is said to have originated during the 1980s and 1990s in North America and has since been recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club. The Pomapoo popularity steadily increased over time and they are now among the most favored toy-sized dogs. The mix between Pomeranians and Toy Poodles is one of the most popular in the United States.
