About the Breed

The Mini Portidoodle is a gorgeous designer dog that charms with unique looks and strong loyalty to its owners. As a cross between a Miniature Poodle and a Portuguese Water Dog, this pup inherits the best qualities of two amazing parent breeds. 

Miniature Portidoodles originated in the United States a few years back when their standard counterpart became a hit with dog lovers. Standard Portidoodles are a mix of a Standard Poodle and a Portuguese Water Dog. They are a hypoallergenic dog breed that is renowned for its intelligence and love for water. Like their standard counterparts, Mini Portidoodles are an energetic, easily trainable dog breed that excels at water sports. They make fantastic companion dogs for active owners. 

Although rare, these lovely pooches are currently one of the most popular designer breeds in the United States.

Appearance and Grooming

As a mix of two different dog breeds, these mini puppies can sport various looks, coat colors, and sizes. They are study-built, strong, and quite fluffy. They have dark eyes, floppy ears, and a long tail that curls over their backs. Their gorgeous curly coats can come in a myriad of gorgeous colors, most often combinations of colors that their parents come in. They can sport coats that are white, black, brown, cream, gray, merle, and sable. As miniature dogs, their size is small, weighing between 14 and 28 pounds and standing at 10 to 20 inches tall.

Since they don't shed, grooming should be done regularly. Daily or bi-daily brushing is recommended to ensure their hair doesn't get tangled or knotted. 

Temperament

Miniature Portidoodle puppies have the same temperament as their parents. They are calm, easy-going, and quite friendly. Aggression or protective behavior is not common in these dogs, but they should receive socialization training nonetheless. They are not big barkers either so they fit quite nicely with owners who live in apartments. 

Family and Companionship

Given their friendly nature and energetic disposition, these dogs make remarkable family pets. They enjoy going on adventures and thrive when they are included in all family activities. Mini Portidoodles are also fantastic dogs for children. Because they are a breed that craves companionship, they should not be left alone for too long. They do best when surrounded by people.

Exercise

As an energetic breed, Mini Portidoodles need on average 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day. They do best with two daily walks and enough indoor activities that can keep both their minds and bodies active. Puzzle games and swimming are their favorite activities.

Training and Socialization

One of the most intelligent dog breeds in Dogdom, Mini Portidoodle puppies train quite easily. These bright puppies respond best to positive reinforcement and reward-based methods of training. They pick up on commands quickly and enjoy getting praised for a job well done. 

Socialization training should begin as soon as the puppy arrives home. It is beneficial to introduce these puppies to new people, sounds, and places early to ensure they mature into well-behaved adult dogs.
